Corporate Training

Employees have very different perspectives on what is involved in corporate training. The mention of training might provoke some eye rolling, as they see themselves at a conference table listening to a motivational speaker telling them how to maximize their potential. Others might groan over the prospect of going on a wilderness hike and participating in touchy-feely exercises intended to help them bond with their coworkers.

Certainly these methods of training are commonly used. They might not be appropriate for all employees, however. To decide on a method of training, you must first clarify the intent of training. The benefits of corporate training include improved communication between all levels of management and a reduction of legal risk. With the right instructor, materials, and setting, simple exercises and classes can greatly increase the company’s profitability and efficiency.

Employee Training

Very often, companies consider refresher or additional employee training, or they review their training program with an eye to revamping it. Some training focuses on position-specific job skills, while other training applies to almost all positions. Employee training can boost motivation and morale among employees and result in increased productivity and consequent financial gains for the company.

One reason to implement employee training is poor evaluation. If the company finds a problem area, it is worthwhile to design a training program for that area. It might not be cost effective to provide a single employee with additional training except through mentoring, but one poor evaluation may be indicative of a larger problem. Employee training does not necessarily have to mean bad news, however; it may be implemented to prepare the best employees to assume new positions.

Perhaps all employees can benefit from training in communications. This training serves everyone, not only employees, but also managers, as the entire staff can refine their ability to communicate with each other and customers more effectively. Training in conflict resolution and team building is also beneficial for everyone in the workplace, especially if friction is a problem. Training in safety, cultural diversity, and sexual harassment might be needed to ensure an atmosphere conducive to productivity.

Why bother to offer employee training if it is not absolutely essential? One reason is to minimize legal risks to the company. Employees should be made aware of or periodically review policies on racial and cultural diversity and sexual harassment. Training can also focus on the proper operation of new equipment and upgrades, as employees usually need to be trained in new systems and state-of-the-art equipment.
